Summer Daze Activity #1

Back in April, the Children’s Committee at church (which I am a part of) talked about what we wanted to do this year (during the summer) for the kids….

We decided NOT to do something every week….

Not because anybody deserves justification…but here’s the 3 reasons why we decided not to have activities every week:

1.)    Give the teachers who teach every Wednesday night during the school in our PB&J program a break

2.)    Give the families a break from having to go somewhere every night. A lot of our families are involved in T-ball, baseball, softball, karate, boy scouts, etc. So, having church on Wednesday nights is a blessing, but it just becomes “another activity” to have to come to…so we’re just giving them a break!

3.)    We cannot get volunteers to help. Last year we tried to do a summer activity and we tried to rotate people to “teach” and ended up having the same 2 people do it the whole summer….

Our disclaimer**

We, as the Children’s Committee, stand behind and stand firm on what we have decided. The reason why we were placed on the Children’s Committee is because we love the kids of our church and we want to do what is best for the children of our church and for their parents. We have to meet the children and the parents where “they are” and meet the needs that they have/that are relevant to their lives today. And the fact is….our children/parents/families are busy and tired. They are much busier than when you and I grew up, so our curriculum/teachings/activities have to change and adapt to that. We are doing our church a disservice if we plan things that are not benefiting them in the season of life that they are in. Therefore, we, as the committee, think that having 3 “big” events (one a month) is a way for our families to be able to have something to look forward to but also have the freedom to go, travel, have fun, live on a different schedule during the summer–that’s the whole point of summer!!
We can’t create programs and curriculum just for sake of creating them, if they are not what our kids/parents need. What our kids and parents need is something that is not “regimented” and adapted to their schedule, not the other way around.

And, so Summer Daze Activities were born!! We have 3 major summer activities: one per month!

June: Wet n Wild at church (water games, toys, slip n slide, etc.)

July: Park n Play (bring your own dinner and play at the City park)

August: The best of both worlds (bring your own dinner and we will be swimming at Toni’s house)

(anyway) So, last night we had our 1st Activity. It was a BLAST!!! Everyone loved it–
